The Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation, Hoopa Fire Department is a Self-Governance Compact Tribe, and is Compact Funded. The fire program has been in the process of building a larger workforce to staff the departments three, Type III fire engines, and three Type IV fire engines, and a Type I Water Tender. Each engine is staffed seven days a week during the fire season with five firefighters. The staffed positions have a mixed combination of permanent and temporary employees covering all levels of qualification from entry level firefighter to Engine Captain.
Hoopa participates in the national suppression effort through cooperative agreements and mutual aid. Our firefighters travel around the country to provide suppression assistance.
