Hoopa Tribal Police Department Update, January 2019

Happy New Year’s to everyone, and we hope the celebrations were safe and memorable! To help bring in the New 2019 Year, we would like to give a brief update about the Police Department; a more detailed update will be administered at the upcoming Tribal General Meeting, this Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at 10 am in the Neighborhood Facility.

2018 was a successful year full of Department growth–consistent with the goals of the Tribal Chairman and Tribal Council. The Tribal Police Department increased in size by three new cadet graduates, from the College of the Redwoods Police Academy in Eureka, CA and the Indian Police Academy in Artesia, NM, respectfully.

In addition, the Tribal Police Department solidified a CTA Grant in 2018 with an emphasis on equipment. Through this award and other sources, the Police Department was able to purchase three (3) new patrol vehicles, one (1) new boat, and allocated funding to training and miscellaneous equipment. We plan on applying for the 2019 CTAS Grant and utilizing the funds to hire additional police personnel; our goal is to aim for 18 sworn officers by the end of 2019.

Lastly, there are various other developments in progress for the Tribal Police Department in 2019. But, the above information represents some major goals and facts from the Department. Further details will be discussed this Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at the Tribal General Meeting.
